Weather patterns, pressure systems, and the time of year all influence water levels in the Murchison River. By cruising at high tide, we ensure full access to the river, allowing us to travel as far as any vessel can go and experience all the highlights along the way!
What to expect ...
Step aboard Kalbarri’s exclusive river cruise, the only one of its kind on the tranquil Murchison River. Your journey begins with a warm welcome, followed by a safety briefing and induction before departure. The cruise takes you approximately 6km upstream through the lower reaches of the river—covering a 12km round trip—the furthest point navigable by any vessel.
Along the way, enjoy captivating commentary on the local fishing industry, the region’s fascinating history, and the unique wildlife and plant life of the area. You’re welcome to join in the conversation and share your insights or simply sit back, relax, and take it all in.
As the landscape opens to vast spaces and low shrubbery, keep an eye out for diverse bird species. The river is home to ospreys, kites, pelicans, egrets, black swans, and the majestic white-breasted sea eagles. On occasion, you might also spot kangaroos, emus, and goats along the riverbanks.
The scenery shifts with dramatic colored rock formations and a narrow channel near Goat Island. At our turnaround point, we often stop at Rocky Crossing, allowing you to stretch your legs and enjoy the surroundings. The return journey offers plenty of opportunities to relax, snap photos, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty.
To conclude, we visit the river mouth where the Murchison River meets the powerful Indian Ocean, navigating one of Western Australia’s most challenging channels. Witness the sheer force of the water as it moves through this dramatic meeting point, a fitting end to a truly memorable cruise.
